NMC MBBS Seat Matrix 2026-27 Released: 25 New Medical Colleges Approved, MBBS Seats Cross 1.36 Lakh
NMC Announces Major Expansion in MBBS Seats for 2026-27
The National Medical Commission (NMC), through its Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), has released the official MBBS Seat Matrix for the 2026-27 academic session. The notification, issued on 14 July 2026, confirms a significant increase in undergraduate medical education capacity across India.
According to the official seat matrix, 823 medical colleges have been approved to admit students for the 2026-27 academic year, offering a combined total of 1,36,939 MBBS seats. These figures exclude Institutes of National Importance (INIs) such as AIIMS, JIPMER, PGIMER and other centrally governed institutes.
For NEET UG 2026 aspirants, this is one of the most important announcements before counselling begins, as the approved seat matrix determines the seats available for both MCC All India Quota counselling and state counselling authorities.
Key Highlights of the NMC MBBS Seat Matrix 2026-27
The latest notification brings several important developments for medical aspirants across the country.
| Particulars | 2026-27 |
|---|---|
| Total Medical Colleges | 823 |
| Total MBBS Seats | 1,36,939 |
| New Medical Colleges | 25 |
| Additional Seats Added | 9,911 |
| Government Colleges | 441 |
| Private Colleges | 382 |
Compared to the renewed base of 1,27,028 seats, India has added 9,911 MBBS seats, representing an increase of approximately 7.8%.
This expansion comes from two major sources:
- Approval of 25 new medical colleges, contributing 2,400 MBBS seats
- Increase in intake at 129 existing colleges, adding another 7,511 seats
Most existing colleges received an increase of either 50 seats or 100 seats, following NMC’s standard expansion pattern.
Government vs Private Medical Colleges
One of the most notable observations from this year’s seat matrix is the continued growth of private medical education.
| Type | Colleges | Seats |
|---|---|---|
| Government | 441 | 63,296 |
| Private | 382 | 73,643 |
Private institutions now account for 53.8% of all MBBS seats, while government colleges contribute 46.2%.
Among the newly approved colleges, 18 are private institutions, accounting for 2,000 of the 2,400 newly approved seats. The remaining seven government colleges contribute 400 seats.
This trend highlights the increasing role of private institutions in expanding India’s medical education capacity.
Karnataka Continues to Lead India in MBBS Seats
Karnataka remains the largest contributor to MBBS education in India.
With 75 medical colleges offering 15,395 MBBS seats, Karnataka has retained the top position in the country. More than 70% of these colleges are private institutions, reflecting the state’s long-established private medical education ecosystem.
The top states by MBBS seats are:

|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Karnataka | 75 | 15,395 |
| 2 | Uttar Pradesh | 88 | 14,000 |
| 3 | Tamil Nadu | 78 | 13,999 |
| 4 | Maharashtra | 86 | 13,099 |

Although Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of medical colleges, Karnataka continues to lead in total approved MBBS seats.
