The Supreme Court of India has lifted a 27-year-old ban. Which previously prevented students who pursuing their education through distance learning. They can be sitting for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for undergraduate courses. NEET, considered the most prestigious medical entrance examination in India, attracts millions of aspirants each year. The above court ruling, delivered by a bench comprising Justice P.S. Narasimha and Justice Arvind Kumar, came in response to an appeal filed by the Medical Council of India (MCI) against a Delhi High Court verdict that allowed open school students to appear for the exam.
The decision marks a significant relief for students enrolled in distance education programs. Previously, they were ineligible to apply for NEET. This restriction had been in place for almost three decades. However, the ruling emphasizes inclusivity and equal opportunities in education. It ensures that the mode of obtaining secondary education does not become a barrier to aspiring medical students.
The verdict has opened doors for students who have completed their 10+2 examinations, through open schools recognized by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
