In a new turn of events, the Supreme Court has ruled that NEET UG is mandatory for Indian students who wish to pursue or are currently pursuing MBBS abroad to later practice medicine in India.
Supreme Court Ruling on NEET UG Mandatory to Practice Medicine in India
The regulation requiring Indian students to clear NEET UG before pursuing MBBS abroad was upheld by the Supreme Court. This ensures that students returning to practice medicine in India maintain a uniform academic standard. Thus, any students currently studying Medicine in foreign countries must qualify NEET UG if they wish to practice as medical professionals in India.
NEET UG 2025 Requirement
Since 2018, the Medical Council of India has mandated that students enrolling in foreign medical programs must pass NEET UG as a prerequisite. Without this qualification, India will not recognize their degrees for medical practice.
Impact on Indian Students from Supreme Court’s Ruling
- NEET UG is compulsory for those who want to study MBBS abroad and practice in India.
- Students can still study and work abroad without NEET if they do not intend to return to India for medical practice.
